NDT
hyem is a host to many cultural anomalies. its exceedingly limited resources and inhabitable land makes living in close quarters a necessity. there is no outlier clans on hyem, all clans have melded together. other kins like demons and selkas also reside with the iyacan clans. the lack of resources and the harsh icy weather has created a more tightly knitted community. under normal planetary circumstances, sentinels arent allowed to leave their spire often. however, with the size of hyem, the spire is located within the iyacans main palace.
another example of the aforementioned cultural exceptions is the political marriage the joins the iyacans and the northern demon tribe (NDT). arjun, hyems sentinel, had married one of the NDT's promising artisans after they were assigned under arjun's palace. this wouldnt occur on binary I or II, sentinels are expected to be celibate because of religious duty. in arjun's case, the close proximity of everyone means that favorable clan relations are especially important.
narrative commentary: arjun arguably has the most comfortable life out of the main characters. he has a spouse, is surrounded by a mostly supportive community, and doesn't have to fear the isolation that normally comes with being a sentinel. however, i would say arjun is the most unhappiest of the trio.
arjun is a representation of the quiet anger that comes from pleasing others. you have this tight knit community that supports and cherishes you, but its not in the way you neccasarily want. arjun never had a choice in becoming a sentinel, he is still bound by duty. the rewards he gets from carrying out his responsibilities is to play house and family. he gets to play pretend at life in the spare few hours he gets from his job, and it is faked. his spouse may Care for him but the marriage was pressed on by clan elders; he may have a loving community but they do not care for arjun, they care for the sentinel chosen by god. it is a stewing resentment that showcases itself in outward bursts of anger from arjun. he stays complacent and doesnt choose for himself because he believes there is truly nothing else on that tiny planet, it is scary starting anew when your world is so close together for such a long time.
